It's Dorado bonanza time in Cabo as anglers get terrific Dorado catches

It has truly been bonanza dorado fishing from Cabo San Lucas with the boats having terrific catches of mostly quality sized dorado that have ranged from about 15-30 lbs. or so. While there are some smaller fish, most are being released to grow due to the ease of catching bigger dorado. The billfish bite has been off this past week but not for a lack of fish but a lack of hungry biters. The boats are seeing plenty of billfish but having difficulty getting them to into the bite mode. The fall weather seems to have arrived in Cabo and the resulting sea conditions have provided some excellent fishing days. Charters have picked up considerably as we turned into October and this past week was one of the better for the past 8-10 months or so. The combined offshore fishing days reflected 40 days fished that resulted in catches that included 21 stripers, (19 released) 3 sailfish, (released) 1 wahoo, 1 skipjack tuna and 225 dorado. Cabo Climate: Mostly sunny days through the week with pleasant temps that ranged from 69 nights to 92 daytime highs. Surface breezes mostly from the westerly directions and ranged from calm to about 14 mph, all of which is very fishable. Sea Conditions: Near excellent on all sides. Pacific side is all stable at 83-84 degrees from the Finger Bank to Jaime Bank and then increasing to 86-87 degrees from Cristobal, wrapping around Cabo and into the Sea of Cortez. Good clarity in all areas. Best Fishing Areas: The inshore areas, very close to the shoreline around Migrino, have been loaded with quality dorado and a few smaller fish for releasing. It's been excellent fishing for limits on dorado and even an occasional marlin. Roberto Marquez, owner/captain of the "Tuna Time" was commenting about the billfish so close to the beach they could be caught from surf casting. They had a jumper that near hit the rock outcropping from the beach. Last week, they lost a black or a blue marlin in the same area, less than 50 yards from the shoreline. Dorado are readily available on both sides of the peninsula right now and it appears it will continue. The size of the fish are mostly in the 15-30 lb. ranges allowing for keeping the bigger fish and releasing the smaller ones. Best Lure/Bait: Dorado taking both very well, arttificials, feathers, lures, etc. and live bait or rigged baits. The fish are not bashful and have been eager to bite. Only non-eager biters this past week were the billfish and according to Roberto, they continue to be very stubborn biters. Live Bait Supply: Excellent for caballitos at $3.00 per bait.
