"The lower islands have some very good yellowtail fishing," said Brian Kiyohara, American Angler owner-skipper. He had just docked at Point Loma Sportfishing August 14, after a four-day trip with 27 anglers. "We even got some dorado there, on the anchor."
Charlie Hone of Gardnerville, NV won first place, for a 28-pound yellowtail he casught on a sardine and a 4/0 Mustad hook. He said the fight took 15 minutes, that he had "?Ķan awesome trip," and that he used 30-pound blue Izorline on a Penn 545 reel and a seven-foot Ugly Stick.
Brent Curtis of Garnnerville was second, for a 26.2-pounder, and Art Swerdloff of Marina del Rey was third, for a 23,8-pound yellowtail. Anglers aboard said the king yellowtail catcher was Matt Bennett, 11 and a student at Moffett Elementary School in Huntington Beach, so Matt stepped into the jackpot lineup.
