Fish Report for 8-19-2013

Fall Offshore fishing with the Long Range fleet is better than it has been in some time

Fall offshore fishing is the best of the year! Tuna, Dorado, Yellowtail, Wahoo and Snapper feed fast, to fatten up for cool water and winter migration. Excel's anglers find big yellowfin tuna biting sardines at Alijos Rocks and hot fishing on The Ridge and below Magdalena Bay during the best year ever for high-jumping Dorado. Sweet weather and calm seas add to the pleasure of jig casting, kite fishing and flylining sardines, with plenty of released fish during a contest aboard the Big Rig, the 124-foot luxury sportfisher Excel, built by legendary long range pioneer Bill Poole.

Come aboard with Bill Roecker and other expert long rangers, and flip your bait into The Hot Zone!

Short Trips in Local Waters
The short trips are still picking away at bluefin, but having better luck on yellowtail, with some dorado and yellowfin tuna showing in the catches. Topping yesterday's closest fish counts was one posted by the Pride, fishing overnight out of Seaforth, with 80 yellowtail, eight dorado and 57 bluefin tuna, for 16 anglers.

Most of the long range fleet fished for yellowtail during the past day or two. Several kept after the bluefin tuna, however, and enjoyed good success.
