Fish Report for 8-10-2013
The flows on the Trinity River will be adjusted to keep the water cold for the Salmon
8-10-2013
The Fly Shop
Current River Conditions: The Trinity flows will be adjusted in order to reach flows of 2,800 cubic feet per second in the lower Klamath River from mid-August through the last week of September. Current flow forecasts indicate that Lewiston Dam releases will increase from the current rate of 450 cfs on the 13th and will vary between about 1,000 and 1,200 cfs, prior to dropping to 450 cfs again in late September. Between Aug. 26 and 27, a pulse flow release from Lewiston Dam could be as high as 2,600 cfs. Why? To protect the Salmon! They need cold water to survive and the Trinity is at 70?? below Junction City. Cold water will help!
Until then, Look for the best fishing up in Lewiston where the water is cooler. Some reports of warm 70?? water below Junction City mean the fishing down there won't be all that great. All in all, fishing has been pretty good according to TFS pro guide Lonnie Boles! Lonnie has been into the big King Salmon that show up in the upper Trinity at this time of year. River flows are down to a manageable 446 CFS. Expect to find some solitude and enjoy a few tugs in those runs you found big steelhead in last winter.
So, if you want to find great fishing near Lewiston, Ca. we recommend Lewiston Lake!
The Fly Shop's?? Tips: A variety of techniques, using your 8-9wt rod for Salmon (in July-August), or a more adaptable 5-6 wt fly rod for small steelhead and aggressive browns will tie you into fish. Suspending nymphs under an indicator, stripping buggers and leeches, swinging muddlers or PT nymphs will produce hook-ups! Even dry flies should be in the plan. Bring a parachute Adams! Hey! In July-August, the King Salmon will eat nymphs suspended under indicators. What a blast!
Road Conditions:
Road conditions are great! It's summer! Expect delays west of Redding as you approach the twisty turney road leading up to Buckhorn Summit. Serious road work going on! Sometimes the delays can be 30 minutes long. Call 1-800.427.7623 for up to date Northern California Road Conditions.
