Well it is what it is - we knew it was going to be an early closer to the Lake Sabrina Boat Landing season, but little did we expect to pack up the boats before even hitting August. Yup, the Lake is just too shallow. Due to two not so good snow years (appears we're in a bit of a drought), the Lake hit its high water mark for 2013 about 3 weeks ago and then started back down - quick. Edison tried their best to keep us and South Lake up, but alas, demands for water from the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power via the Chandler Decree must be met!
Even as the Lake continues to drop swiftly, the wildlife continues to impress. Two bald eagles at the back of the Lake entertained the anglers fishing at the DingleBerry Inlet - skirmishing in the air high above their heads and then diving into the Lake for a snack - what awesome memories. And we can't forget about the bears in the canyon - yup, another visit from the "Yogi" imposter.
Some nice thunder-boomers at the Lake this past week - and a bit of rain - received a total of just under 2-1/2 inches of rain for the month. Depending on the wind direction, we are either clear (with a south wind) or very smokey from the Aspen Fire over on the other side of the Sierra Crest near Huntington Lake with a north wind.
Taking a hike to the DingleBerry Inlet and shore fishing with NightCrawlers, PowerBait, Salmon Eggs or Jigs is producing some nice limits. Got a good load of stockers from the Department of Fish and Game last Tuesday. They'll keep stocking as long as they can get to the water - not sure how much longer.
There's different equipment on the bridge this week and it's really starting to look like a bridge. The completion date for the bridge is the end of September.
This week's temps are expected to be in the low-40's for the lows and in the mid-70's for the highs. You can check NOAA's website at http://www.weather.gov and enter ASPENDELL, CA on the site and it will give you a fairly good hint at the weather up at the Lake or check in with Howard at www.MammothWeather.com. Also, check out NOAA's Facebook page - US National Weather Service Las Vegas Nevada - they kept us up to date on when the thunder-booms were going to hit this week!
Remember when using the bug juice and SANITIZER you need to really wash your hands before fishing - then rub some Salmon Egg juice, worm dirt or Anglers Bros Trout attractant to take that smell off. Also, remember your polarized dark glasses and sunscreen.
If you happen to come by and see a "CLOSED - GONE FISHIN" sign on the door, it's because we haven't had a car in the lot for at least an hour or two - hope you understand the closed sign - the fish are calling. Bryan will be here during the week periodically to give us a chance to get off the mountain.
