Gilligan gives some tips on dealing with the higher water temps
7-29-2013
Matt Koles
Thankfully we cooled off a bit here on the Truckee River in the Truckee-Reno-Tahoe area. Afternoon t-storms cooled things off this last week and again blew the river out through Reno and on the East side. August can be full of afternoon thunderstroms, awesome at times, but it can and will blow the river out, not to mention the lighting that comes with it. We've somehow made it through a very high fire season unscathed thus far in the Tahoe area, lets keep our fingers crossed for the rest of the season. Crays, big-big golden stones, caddis, and pmds are on the menu. Water temps are still warm after about lunch time. If you come up and fish, or are a local fly angler bring a thermomenter with you and check the water temp. You're usually ok in the morning, but when the sun gets high, so does the water temp. Water temps above 70 can be lethal. Over in Montana they'd close the river, here no one gives a shit, but you should. Get the grip n grins done in the morning, when the water warms keep in the water. With the above average usage on the Truckee River these days it's up to you to do the right thing.
