Limits of Kings
7-22-2013
Chad Woods
Our recent charter aboard the Kahuna was a smashing success. We departed at 6 AM. Our objective was to catch some King Salmon. The reports over the past few weeks had improved and our expectations were high. As of July 20th we had not seen wide open King Salmon in Monterey Bay .... yet. Due to the low counts our load on the SportfishingReport.com charter were rather light. We were anticipating a load of 10 anglers but as it turned out we had a total of 8 including the crew. Which made for a quite comfortable trip. Too bad for the 4 no shows. I doubt they will miss another trip after they hear what happened.
Once we departed we headed for Santa Cruz. The swell in the bay was mild and there was very little wind. We traveled for about 20 minutes when Captain Donnie Davi decided to stop on a large spot of birds. There were no boats around. Just us and the birds. It did not take long for the bite to begin. Cindy Arnold was the first to hook up and she landed a nice King Salmon. Later on Buzz Fitzpatrick caught a beauty too. From there on it was pretty much full speed. We fished in 120 feet of water. The fish were usually hooked around 75 feet. But we did have some bite right at the surface. It was a very fishy spot. As the morning rolled on we continued catching Kings and the fleet eventually arrived. Around 10:30 we finished and we had the first LIMIT style day for a Party Boat from Monterey Bay. We ended up with 8 limits of Kings including the crew. The fish were nice quality with about 4 of them pushing 30 pounds. All I can say is WOW! This was by far the best Salmon fishing trip for SFR to date.
We would like to thank Carol Jones, Captain Donnie Davi, and deckhand BJ for the wonderful memories. This trip is for the archives.
The Kahuna is available for charter and also runs open party trips. You can call them at (831) 633-2564 to get in on the action.
