New Melones Guide Report from John Liechty

The bass bite has been a little tough lately due to warm weather and dropping water levels. The fish are spending most the day in deeper water and moving to shallow water in the morning and evening. There are very few fish coming to the surface for top water baits. But the ones that do are better than average fish. Friday morning I had a trip with Lance Withee and Jim Alley. We met at the dock at 6:00 am before the sun was on the water. We spent the first hour or so fishing top water baits looking for that big bite. About a half hour into the trip we got it. A nice 4-pound large mouth exploded on the Super Spook Jim was walking to the boat. That was the only top water fish for the day. Once the sun was on the water we switched to small crank baits and soft plastics. The rest of the morning we fished the main lake and caught a handful of fish.

Saturday evening I met Ken Shevock, David Salverson, and 7 year old Jack Salverson at the launch around 4:00pm. The lake was fairly crowded and a little on the hot side. We focused on main lake points with deep water access nearby. Our first stop we had one taker but it came off at the boat. We continued to fish the main lake points and mud lines with no luck. We tucked away in the back of a creek arm where there was shade on the water and there was no boating traffic. Ken, David, and Jack fished very hard and their persistence paid off. We landed a nice large mouth bass that took a Roboworm fished on a Carolina rig. From that point on, the bite seemed to really turn on. We caught several nice spotted and large mouth bass.

It was a very successful weekend and overall a great fishing Xperience for everyone.
