We cleared the point by 13:30 and are heading on a southerly course through the myriad of seiners and tow boats. The weather has come down quite a bit which will help in the effort of offshore exploration tomorrow.

7-18-2007We spent a few days hunting bluefin and scored some nice albacore fishing and a fantastic view of a blue whale mom and calf. We continue to have challenges getting bluefin to bite our live sardines. One hypothesis is that the bluefin are feeding on anchovy bait balls and getting them to switch to sardines is a challenge. Bluefin tuna must have good vision. Afterall they warm their eyes with counter-current heat exchangers that keep the retinal temperature above ambient. That is just one hypothesis as to why they won't take our live baits even when we present them on 20 lb fluorocarbon.. In the old days (1999), our team would only use heavy gear for any size bluefin to reduce stress on the capture when live collecting. Now- we use anything we can- to try and catch...... Read More
