Big 19 pound catfish caught at Corona Lake

6-2-2013
Jim Matthews

With the recent heavy weekly stockings of catfish, tilapia and monster cats contributed to the great catfish opener at Corona Lake. Fishermen in boats had a advantage with superb fishing across the lake, back in the trees. Shore anglers did quite well fishing at the dam or at J.D.'s point. The heaviest fish of the week was caught by Gilbert Mallada, pictured of Lake Elsinore.

Gilbert landed a huge 19 1/4 lbs. catfish using shrimp back in the tules. Jacob & Josh Panian of Yucaipa & Max Velasquez of San Jacinto landed 13 catfish totaling 34 lbs. 8oz. The team was using both night-crawlers & mackerel fishing from a boat at the dam. Oliver Valdez of Corona caught 5 crappie totaling 6 pounds using jigs at the south end of the lake. Mike Ortiz of Riverside caught 5 catfish totaling 17 1/2 lbs. Mike's biggest cat weighed 5 1/2 pounds using chicken livers at J.D.'s point. Corona Lake is open seven-days-a-week and has 24 hour overnight fishing/camping sessions every weekend during the summer.
