Truckee River Outfitters
We have had some warmer days over the past week. After dealing with ice in the river for most of January, we are seeing some much improved conditions now. The river is in great shape and the flows are perfect. The water is still cold but this time of year if you get a day when the sun comes out and the water warms up only a degree or two the fish can get active. There have been some nice Browns and Rainbows caught over the past week and this week could be even better.
Access in California is getting easier now with the snow in most of the parking lots all but gone. It does not look like we will get any substantial weather for the next week or more. The further you go downstream the better the fishing. The water has more time to warm up and the fish are more active. Late mornings to mid afternoons are the best time to be on the water right now. There is not much in the way of bugs right now except for the occasional Baetis. Fishing smaller streamers in deeper pools can be effective but it also eats up water faster. Nymphing with a small dark Stone Fly with a Baetis dropper is also a good way to go. Fish the slower water, deeper pools, slow moving seams and places where fish do not have to work too hard. There is plenty of oxygen in the colder water and the fish will usually not be in faster water in these conditions. Flows are: Town of Truckee 186 CFS, Boca Bridge 367 CFS, Farad 402 CFS and Reno 395 CFS.We have had some warmer days over the past week.
