There is still a good Billfish bite at Mazatalan

The offshore billfish action remains at about a 50% catch rate for the anglers, albeit, there are not that many boats fishing the offshore areas right now. While the water temps are holding up well for this time of year, the off colored water has moved in and extends out to about 15 miles or so, keeping the fish moving around in search of cleaner waters. Marlin tend to be much more sensitive to the off color waters while the sailfish don't seem to be nearly as affected. The sailfish are much more affected by cooler water temps, preferring in the high 70's to high 80's and the stripers liking 74-79 degree ranges. The Aries Sportfishing Fleet reported in for 9 days fished that provided 4 stripers and 1 sailfish, along with 2 mako sharks from the offshore waters and the inshore super pangas reporting in for 6 days fished reflected 1 black snook, 6 corvina, 11 red snappers and near limits of triggerfish.

Mazatlan Climate: Mostly cloudy days with warming of temperatures from 58 nights to 83 daytime highs and mostly light and variable surface breezes from the westerly directions.

Sea Conditions: The warmer waters are inshore, holding at about 78 degrees with a temp break at about 15-17 miles or so, falling to 75 degrees. Most of the inshore waters are off-color and greenish tinted with the cleaner off shore waters starting at about 18-20 miles.

Best Lure/Bait: Rigged baits caught the billfish and the mako sharks and were the bait of choice for the skippers.

Best Fishing Area: None reported. The fish were scattered over a wide area out to the southwest of the Marina El Cid.

Bait Supply: Good bait supply for the fresh rigging baits and remained good for the live bait supply, even through the full moon phase.
