Sam Patella docked American Angler at Pt. Loma Sportfishing after an eight-day trip. The day before, he wrote, "Our trip started at the Rocks and due to lack of Tuna fish, we came in on the inside and had just a great time fishing for Yellowtail. Yesterday was just an epic day and with the weather up we all had a great time fishing in the calm of the big Island - it was a nice treat.
"This was a great group of guys, mostly regulars with some new faces and all a pleasure to fish with. Drew Grindley was the Catchy Tackle rep who gave away a bunch of nice gifts. Thank you."
Todd Phillips, a San Pedro skipper, won first place for a 70-pound yellowfin. He said he fished it up with a sardine on a 2/0 Flyliner hook, tied to 40-pound Seaguar fluorocarbon leader and 60-pound Line One Spectra backing on a Saltiga 30 reel and a Calstar 6470 rod. The fight went 20 minutes, he added.
Joe Ferris of Carlsbad was second, for a 54.5-pound yellowfin tuna.
