The Izorline charter aboard the Intrepid with Shauna Barton as chartermistress arrived when the boat docked under Bill Cavanaugh's hand at Pt. Loma Sportfishing January 6. There were 21 anglers aboard, and the 11-day trip fished in the Buffer Zone at Clarion Island. Weather was a problem, said Bill, with wind and swell principal troublemakers. The trip found plenty of tuna in the 60 to 120-pound range, with the kite producing all three jackpot fish.

Daniel Chun of Roslyn, NY picked off a 261-pounder with a flying fish under the kite, pinned on a 10/0 Mustad 7691 hook. "About 25 minutes," he told dock reporter Bill Roecker. "It's my best fish." Chun used 130-pound Izorline fluorocarbon and 130-pound Izorline spectra on an Avet 80 three-speed reel and a Seeker 6463 XXXH rod. The same rig, the boat's, was used on all three of the jackpot winners.

Chuck Kelly of San Diego won second place for a 191-pound tuna. Mitch Chavira of Carlsbad took 30 minutes to bring in a 177-pounder, good for third place. His son Cole, 15, got a 160-pounder.
