Fish Report for 1-4-2013
Fishing to close on the Nisqually River

WA Department of Fish & Wildlife Staff
Action: Close Nisqually River to fishing.
Effective Dates: 12:01 a.m. Jan. 6, 2013.
Species Affected: All species.
Location: Nisqually River from the mouth to the military tank crossing bridge (located one mile upstream of the mouth of Muck Creek); Pierce/Thurston counties.
Reason for Action: Based on spawning surveys and harvest information available to date, WDFW is concerned that the winter chum return to the Nisqually River is not as abundant as forecast and has the potential to fall short of the escapement goal. Given this information and the need to achieve shared conservation goals, both WDFW and the Nisqually Tribe are closing their respective fisheries for chum salmon. The river is already closed to the retention of wild steelhead.
