Mexcian Grouper Regulations, which groupers can be brought back to California

The Department of Fish and Game recently notified boat owners that they could not bring grouper back into California. We have discussed the matter with the DFG and the resolution is that you may bring back only grouper Legal to Take and Possess in California and Mexico. You must identify the specific species from the list below in SECTION A and enter the information on your DFG log by specific species. SECTION B groupers may not be brought back.

SECTION A. Legal to Take and Possess in California and Mexico

Sawtail Grouper, M. prionura
Leopard Grouper, M. rosacea
Sailfin Grouper, M olfax (Clipperton and Cocos Islands)
Snowy Grouper, Epinephelus niveatus
Olive Grouper, E cifuentesi
Pacific Goliath Grouper (Jewfish), E. quinquefasciatus

SECTION B. Currently Illegal to Take or Possess in California- Legal to Take in Mexico

Gulf Grouper, Mycteroperca jordani
Broomtail Grouper, M. xenarcha
