Mike Ramirez made it two trips back to back, as the Excel relief skipper ran the boat on the second trip that arrived at Fisherman's Landing October 31, just in time for spooky night. It was an Accuratesponsored trip, and the chartermaster was Gary Gillingham of Accurate.
"The Ridge was good on yellowfin up to about 80 pounds," said Mike to dock reporter Roecker. "The temperature there has dropped to about 75 degrees, real good for tuna. Most of the yellowfin were 25 to 30 pounds. We had beautiful weather." "We saw an awful lot of yellowfin to 40 pounds," agreed Gillingham. We gave the big fish a shot, but missed 'em. Yellowtail fishing was great. I brought a lot of rods and reels on the boat, and many of the anglers learned how to use the yoyo jig with those. The yellows were eating the jig real good."
Gary Cox of Julian won first place for a 75.6-pound yellowfin tuna. Mary Lukas of Simi Valley won second place for a 72-pound tuna. Harry Fuller of Phoenix won third place for a 67.2-pound yellowfin, and Excel long-time long ranger Gerry Steinberg of LA showed off a 71-pound wahoo for honorable mention.
