"Our first day of this 4-day charkbait trip turned out to be fairly successful," said the report from Red Rooster III September 7. "We only stopped on two kelps all day but the first kelp was holding some serious fish. We were still about 100 yards from the kelp when we got a 4-way jig strike. The tuna climbed the chum line and settled into the starboard corner, eating every bait tossed over the side. The guys quickly overcame their first day jitters and put some fish on the boat. After that slowed down we ran up to the kelp proper and tried another drift. When we left the kelp we were stocked up on Yellowfin tuna and had a dozen or so nice size Dorado. We managed to keep busy the rest of the day with jig stops on tuna and Dorado. All in all it was a great way to start a trip. The weather was nice today with a hot sun and a slight breeze to compliment it."
