Fish Report for 8-23-2012
Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo has bounced back & is producing terrific catches of quality Dorado
8-23-2012
Larry Edwards
After last week's doldrum fishing report for Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo, the place has truly come back to life and the area is producing terrific catches on some quality sized dorado that range from 20-40-plus lbs., and according to Captain Temo Verboonen, it's easy limit style fishing. Then, it gets better, as the fish are just an easy 5 mile run from the entrance of the bay and are eager to bite on most anything the moves through the water. While there were not many sailfish for the week, (due to the easy dorado fishing) there were still a few caught, but more accidentally than on purpose. Most of the boats that fished were completely pre-occupied with the quality and numbers of dorado available for their anglers. The roosterfish have returned and closer to the Bay, along Playa Larga, and the voracious jack crevalle are also biting good. All-in-all, it has been a huge improvement over the previous week's report and barring any adverse sneak-up adverse weather, it should remain very good fishing. Now, all we need are more anglers for the boats.
IZ Climate: Mostly cloudy days with intervals of sunshine and temps from 70 nights to 88 daytime highs and a few days with 60% chance for PM showers.
Sea Conditions: Generally, pretty good, but according to Temo, it's really great one day and rough the next. The sea temps are excellent and hold at the 85-86 degree range and the surface winds are mostly light & variable.
Best Fishing Area: Almost casting distance from the entrance to the Bay, (only 5 miles out front) for the dorado fishing and even an occasional sailfish.
Best Bait/Lure: The dorado are biting very well on a variety of trolling lures and of course, biting very well on the rigged baits, too. The area is alive with quality sized dorado and easy limit style fishing for the anglers. Lots of release possibilities and for the light tackle and flyfishing enthusiasts, it's a mega-opportunity.
Bait Supply: Excellent bait supply for both, fresh rigging baits and live baits.
