Young anglers ages six through 15 were invited to compete in the 10th Annual Young Angler Tournament at the Shelter Island Pier, located at 1776 Shelter Island Drive. This saltwater event is sponsored each year by the International Game Fish Association, the San Diego Sportfishing Council and the Port of San Diego.

The tournament featured a points system to allow for catch and release. Winners-one in each age category between the ages of six and fifteen were determined by adding up points for various fish caught. The angler with the most points overall is recognized on the tournaments' perpetual trophy. This year over 170 youngsters participated from all the local San Diego cities, Los Angles, Union City and even a family visiting from Spain. New Organizations that joined in were the Good Neighbor Project from Barrio Logan, San Pasqual, Calif. Fish & Game and NOAA. Volunteers from the San Diego Anglers, the San Diego Rod & Reel and the members of the United Pier & Shore Anglers of California again pitched in to make this year's event a success.

Every registered angler received a free prize bag full of donated goodies from, Big Hammer Lures, Pink Fishing, Kelp Clothing, Pelagic, West Marine, Quesy Pops, Booyaa, Everingham Bait, the San Diego Sportfishing Landings Pt. Loma, Fisherman's and H&M. DeFishing Soap, Bob's #1 Tackle, Carl's Jr, Angler's Arsenal, West Coast Tackle Testing & Development and Fathom Bistro, Each age group winner received a new rod & reel combo donated by Okuma Fishing Tackle. In short, every youngster came out a winner.

All of the loaner fishing gear came from the San Diego Sportfishing warehouse and is shared with other sportfishing events such as Day at the Docks, local pier and lake tournaments. The Free Lunch for the contestants, families and friends was donated by Stumps Market. Tommy Gomes and his crew of volunteers served their famous fish tacos from Catalina Offshore Products and Specialty Produce.
Everyone had a great time, enjoying good fishing, great food and a super San Diego sunny day. See the tournament results:
