The catfish and tilapia bites have been good at Anaheim Lake with twice-weekly plants of the cats and weekly tilapia plants.

The best catfish bite has been on a wide variety of baits with anglers fishing mackerel, shrimp, the marshmallow-meal worm (M&M) combination, the marshmallow-nightcrawler combo, or just plain nightcrawlers. Scents like Love Sauce or Eagle Claw Gravy seemed to increase the frequency of strikes. The catfish are showing all around the lake.

Most of the cats were around two pounds, but many stringers had kicker fish up to four pounds. Top fish reported were 4 1/2 pounders, one landed by Cynthia and James Anderson, Duarte, as part of a three-fish nine-pound catch on shrimp off the main point. The second was caught by Denny and Hailey Dilay, Chino, to top off their eight-fish, 16 1/2-pound catch of the M&M combo off the island. Tom Glass, Tustin, had four cats for 12 1/2 pounds the M&M combo with Gravy, while Mark Diaz, Corona, landed five cats for 13 1/2 pounds on mackerel.

Most of the tilapia are showing around the boat docks on nightcrawler pieces. Otis Todd, Santa Monica, had a 10 1/4-pound stringer of fish topped off with a 1 3/4-pounder, while Darnell Smith, Los Angeles, had a five-fish catch that weighed nine-pounds, 10-ounces with his best a 1 1/2-pounder.

Anaheim Lake will continue to receive twice-weekly plants of catfish on Tuesday and Thursday through the rest of the summer fishing season, and tilapia are also planted at least one of those days.

Anaheim Lake is also hosting five Biggest Catfish Derbies every weekend. Entry fee is $5 for any of the five permit time frames -- from 5 to 11 p.m. Friday, from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, from 5 to 11 p.m. Saturday evening, 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, and from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. Sunday evening. (There will be no derbies for the mid-day special at noon or the 24-hour fishing pass holders.) All of the derbies feature a 100 percent payout of the whole pot to the angler catching the biggest catfish. If 20 anglers enter at $5 each, the biggest catfish caught among those 20 anglers wins that angler the whole $100 pot.
