Docking at Pt. Loma Sportfishing July 1, Qualifier 105 skipper Joe Crisci offloaded a nice catch of mixed fish, and weighed the biggest.
"We started at Alijos Rocks, where fishing was slow for a day and a half," said Joe, "and then we fished offshore kelps for dorado and yellowfin. We fished on The Ridge for yellowtail, yellowfin and dorado in beautiful weather. Then we went up to Cedros for yellowtail and halibut, and on the last day we fished for albacore and got 20 and a bluefin. The albacore water's up to 63. 5 to 65 degrees now, and the Rocks are 67 to 68 degrees."
Regular long ranger Gus Angelidis of Roseville won first place for a 77-pound yellowfin. He also won a new Calstar 865 XH rod from chartermaster Mike Shirer. Gus said he fished a sardine on a 4/0 Super Mutu hook. He used 40-pound P-Line on a Penn Torque 300 reel and a Calstar 700 XH rod.
"He was a great fish," said Gus, "and the fishing was great, too."
Mel North of Buena Park was second, for a 54.7-pound tuna on 30-pound line, and John Raspperry of San Diego pulled a rabbit out of the hat for third place, as he decked a 46-pound wahoo with a sardine on 40-pound monofilament.
