Fish Report for 6-7-2012
Cabo water temperature dropped to the low 60's and the fishing slowed with the change
6-7-2012
Larry Edwards
An incredibly difficult and slow fishing week for Cabo San Lucas that saw a dramatic downturn in charters for everyone. The combined total fishing days reported was 11 days that reflected 5 stripers, putting the "Gaviota I" with 3 billfish for 4 days fished as high boat and the Fish Cabo and Tuna Time following with 1 billfish each for 1 day fished. 7 of the 11 days fished drew blanks for the anglers. For most of the week, the cold water whipped around from the Pacific side and into the Sea of Cortez, dropping the sea temperatures to the low 60's that extended outbound from Cabo for more than 25 miles in any direction and as far as the Gorda Banks and outside to the Cabrillo Sea mount. With the cold water came the dirty green water, too, and the billfish just won't stay in the combination of dirty, cold and green water. By late afternoon today, the temps were starting to come back up and the push looked like it was coming down from the Sea of Cortez and had already pushed 10 miles closer to Cabo San Lucas. I this continues through tomorrow, it will be an enormous help to the anglers and crews for the next several days. We'll see.
Cabo Climate: Blowing hard from the Northwest and making the Pacific side virtually unfishable. The days are mostly sunny and warm with an occasional passing few clouds and temps that ranged from 72 nights to 93 daytime highs.
Sea Conditions: Pacific side is terrible with lots of cold water and steady 20-25 mph winds, with lots of steep swells and white caps all over. Sea of Cortez much better and by this afternoon, the water temps had increased back up to 75-77 off of Palmilla Point and extending offshore about 10-15 miles, (the temp increase had moved more than 10 miles in just a short5 hours or so). The water remains very dirty and green and has not yet rolled back over to clean water.
Best Fishing Area: None reported. The billfish that were caught were from Palmilla to above the Gorda Banks.
Best Lure/Bait: Live bait was the right ammunition for the lucky few.
Bait Supply: Remained very good through the week, mostly caballitos.
