Justin Fleck docked Excel June 27 after a seven-day trip with 33 anglers. At the Fisherman's landing scales, he remarked, Alijos Rocks is very good for tuna right now, and for some big yellowtail. Cedros is good, but when we looked at San Pablo we found cold water."
Fleck's anglers had fun, but the jackpot winner, Lyle Burkhart of Claremont, got an extra dose when he spent three hours pulling on a 102-pound yellowfin tuna with a small reel. He said he fished a sardine on a 6/0 Eagle Claw hook, tied to 40-pound Maxima line on a Daiwa 20 reel and a Seeker 660 rod.
Joshua Knight of Tampa, FL won second place for a 60.6-pound tuna, and Dave Dodson of Camarillo took third place for his 57.6-pound yellowtail. James Raab of Pacheco got a 49-pound amberjack with a flylined sardine, and stood in with the winners as honorable mention.
