Striped Marlin action heats up at Cabo
3-30-2012
Larry Edwards
As the week progressed in Cabo San Lucas, the striper action spiraled upwards for many of the boats in the area from the Gorda Banks to Destiladeras, on the Sea of Cortez side of the peninsula. According to the Fish Cabo Fleet Owner, Roberto Marquez, the bite was fast action and almost totally on the artificials as boats were reporting 10-15 strikes per day. The downside was they were nearly all short-biters and blind strikes that made it difficult if not impossible to get a drop back bait o the fish. Nevertheless, it was lots of action and it was keeping anglers and crew on their toes throughout the day. Now, if this bite will only hold in place for a few days, those fish will likely change tactics and begin to cooperate and if nothing else, allow for drop-backs with the live baits. Unfortunately, most of our boats fished short trips this past week and the fish counts do not reflect the new bite area above the Gorda Banks, but we should see some much better reports for the coming week. The overall combined counts for a total of 20 days fished reflected 9 stripers, 1 dorado, 3 yellowfin tuna, 23 skipjack tuna, 1 mako shark, 6 roosterfish, 12 Serra and 12 yellowtail, (mostly in the 20-30 lb. ranges)
Cabo Climate: Mostly sunny, warm days in the mid to low 80s with cool nights at 61-62.
Sea Conditions: Most of the Pacific side is greenish waters and cooling down to the 64-66 degree mark and butting up to 68-69 degree water at Cabo Falso. Continuing to rise from Cabo Falso and into the Sea of Cortez to 72 degrees by Palmilla Ridge and on to Las Frailes.
Best Fishing Area: The area from the Gorda Banks to Destiladeras for the best striper action.
Best Lure/Bait: Artificials were getting bit super well in most colors with the mackerel & dorado colors doing very well.
Bait Supply: Good supply throughout the week, mostly caballitos.
