Dixon Lake Trout season so far has been good to excellent fishing. It seems to be a steady pattern after each stock with near limits galore and excellent fishing for about 3-5 days only....after that, the fishing really tends to slow down the to single numbers being caught. This trend especially happens during a skip week in stocking the lake. The week of March 26-30 will be a skip week for stocking. Best spots for fishing have been Trout Cove, Whisker Bay and Boat Dock cove areas. Fishing from the boats in Catfish cove near the tulles has been productive for near limits of trout. The lake has received over 21,000 lbs. of prime grade "A" Nebraska tail walkers so far this season. Only 3 more stocks of trout remain for this year's trout season.

Top angler of the week goes to Victor Sarabia, pictured of Escondido who landed a 8 lb. 4 oz. beauty of a tail walker trout on a Rooster Tail jig near Whisker Bay and the Buoy line. All other fish on the stringers have been in the 2-4 pound range. For best result for fishing for the elusive trout, try using the lightest line possible in the 2-4 lb. test line with a long leader and a small light weight...this set up seems to works best for these picky fish. Best baits so far for trout have been Power bait in rainbow, green and especially yellow this week. Green, red and orange color Power worms have been the lucky colors for big trout. The top lures this week have been Rooster Tails and the mini crappie jigs in the orange color. Inflated night crawlers are the trout's best friend and are good go-to bait when the bite slows down.

The bass action and spawns that usually starts around March are showing little signs of some activity...a few bass were caught this week from a group scouting out the fishing grounds. Still, not many anglers are targeting the bass this week. Still a tad early for the season to start with water temps being this cold. Plus a turn in the weather with the winter rain storms each weekend doesn't help conditions either. Things could turn around quickly if the right conditions and the spring weather warms ups...could help water conditions improve over the last week in March.

The lake will be planted with another 1500 lbs. of Nebraska "Tail walkers" trout on 04/04/12 all pending weather and road conditions. For further information on the fishing regulations, rules and stocking schedule, call the Dixon Lake Ranger Station at 760-839-4680.

At the present time, Dixon Lake no longer requires a California fishing license from the Dept. of Fish & Game. Dixon Lake has been granted an Aquaculture Permit. All anglers 8 yrs. and older will still need a daily fishing lake permit. All other park rules, fishing regulations and City of Escondido municipal codes will remain in effect until further notice other than no fishing license required.
