FIRST FULL DAY OF FISHING!!! Well we put in a hard day of fishing here on the R.P. and although the catch was not exactly the stuff of dreams, for the first day I don't think there were any complaints. The tuna came in all sizes except extra large ranging from 20 to 170. The bulk of the fish were in the 30 to 60 range and around 6 mostly off the kite were in the 100 and up size. Several around 70 made the total 46 for the day. Even at that, there were three personal bests which are always worth mentioning. Tammie Dodington whose only previous trip didn't even last as long as the ride down got an estimated 125lb tuna on a chunk. Pat Bowlers is a commercial crab fisherman who has probably lifted tons and tons of cages or what ever they trap crabs in, but had never caught a fish over 100 lbs which is around the estimated weight of the kite fish that he got this morning. Finally Rob Creek got an estimated 160 which he assured me topped his previous best. If I was a betting man, which I am, I'd wager all three of them will best their new bests before the end of trip. We also found a few wahoo willing to bite and though many of the "skinnies" lived up to their nick name and were truly skinny, a couple of stops were very hectic and very fun. When the dust settled we had 29 wahoo for the day's total. We'll try it again tomorrow of course and hope both the numbers and size continue to grow. For first day's jitters, I think it went extremely well, tangles were kept to a minimum, and spirits to a maximum.
