The annual Taka Tanaka,in the photo above 16-day trip aboard Royal Polaris returned January 17, when skipper Roy Rose docked the boat at Fisherman's Landing and 26 anglers stepped off after a fine trip for tuna with a smattering of wahoo and other species to go with it. They had 11 cows, tuna over 200 pounds, in the catch. A stop at the islands on the way home saw a contest for calicos and Steve Goto earned the title of Calico King.
John Woodward, in photo #1 of Anaheim won first place for his flylined 228-pound yellowfin tuna. He said it bit on a sardine and a 6/0 ringed Super Mutu hook from Owner. He fished with 130-pound blue Izorline and 130-pound Izorline spectra on a Penn 30 S reel by Cal Sheets and a 770 XH rod wrapped at Taka Tanaka's legendary shop. "He bit only 30 yards from the starboard stern," said John, "and an hour later I got him up on the port stern."
Jack Preston of Alta Loma won second place for a 206-pounder he decked in 35 minutes. It bit on a sardine pinned to a 6/0 ringed Super Mutu hook on 130-pound Yo-Zuri pink fluorocarbon and 130-pound Line One spectra on a Tiagra 30 reel treated by Cal Sheets and a Calstar 770 XH rod.
Calvin Fujimoto of Burbank won third place, not for his 202-pounder, which came on the kite, but for a 197-pound tuna he flylined. His cow bit on a "Double Trouble" sardine rig under the kite. He said he fished with 7/0 ringed Super Mutu hooks, 130-pound blue Izorline, 130-pound Izorline spectra on a Sheets-treated Penn 80 reel and a Calstar 6460 XH rod.
