LAKE POWAY CATCH REPORTS
TROUT REPORT
Lake Record:
17 pounds 14 ounces
Mike Long, 1999
Lake Poway was fortunate enough to yet again have a killer week of trout fishing! As shown above, we had an additional 4 fish over 10 pounds caught this week with close to another dozen or so fish between 5 and 9 pounds caught as well. Justin Sablana of Escondido, in the main photo won bragging rights for this week with his impressive 11.25 pound trout that he caught on the North Shore.
This 3,000 pound stock was chocked full of a great variety of healthy fish of all sizes. Hidden Bay and the Log Boom continue to crank out full stringers for many anglers. As noted above, many large trout were taken on the North Shore and Fishing Pier area as well proving you don't have to hike far to catch the fish of a lifetime! Best baits continue to be Powerbait, Nightcrawlers, or a combination of the two fished on the bottom in as shallow as 2 feet of water to about 20 feet deep. To reiterate a common piece of advice, these fish come from shallow stocking ponds and stay shallow once they get into our lake, despite the availability of deeper, cooler water.
Our next stock is scheduled for December 7, 2011 and will have another great load of 1,500 pounds of only the finest, fiesty Tailwalking trout! Fishing just continues to get better and better with time and additional stocks of quality of fish.
CATFISH REPORT
Lake Records:
Blue Catfish - 34 pounds 8 ounces, Scott Marchese, 2008
Channel Catfish - 28 pounds, Richard Kolas, 1981
Catfish continue to be caught both incidentally and intentionally by anglers on nightcrawlers. The best numbers of fish continue to be caught in the deeper water around the log boom area on both nightcrawlers and mackerel. Trout anglers are reporting catching a few back in Boulder Bay and Hidden Bay on nightcrawlers and Powerbait. No fish of size have been caught as of late, but many anglers are having full stringers of perfect pan frying sized cats ready to eat!
SUNFISH & BLUEGILL REPORT
Lake Records:
Sunfish - 2 pounds 4 ounces, Zach Greim, 2006
Bluegill - 2 pounds 8 ounces, Deadre McCullough, 2002
No large sunfish were caught like they were in previous weeks, but that does not mean that they are not out there! To target these slabs, fish in 10 to 30 feet of water around rock piles if you can find them. The Log Boom near the spillway has been an excellent place to catch them. Many are being caught on nightcrawlers fished simply on the bottom, intended for trout, but in my opinion, they cook up far better than trout!
BASS REPORT
Lake Record:
18 pounds 1 ounce
Mike Long, 2002
Bass fishing continues to be slow and steady. The presence of occasional shad bait balls appearing throughout the lake at random intervals has brought some phenomenal fishing for the anglers able to find them and effectively present a lure to them. The majority of bass fishermen are using a wide assortment of plastic lures over and through deep weedlines and rockpiles. Stomach content analysis shows that the bass are continuing to gorge on crawdads like its nobody's business!
With many of our previous trout stocks, we have had a few "runts," and they are quickly becoming tasty snacks for many double digit bass. Don't be surprised if you see the fish of a lifetime swim by and chomp down someones trout while they reel it in or crush one near the shoreline! They're hungry and are taking advantage of these vulnerable, fatty trout that make great prey!
Best spots continue to by Jump Off Point and Hidden Bay as both places have a variety of different types of structure, bottom contour, and a variety of different forage moving through the area. The key to getting these fish to bite is to fish slow because they are very lethargic. Just because you are not getting bit does not mean that the fish aren't in that area, it just means that they are too lazy to move off their rock for your lure. Trust me, they're down there and ripe for the picking!

11-14-2011CATCH REPORTS TROUT REPORT Lake Record: 17 pounds 14 ounces Mike Long, 1999 As many dissapointed anglers found out on opening day, we had a tremendous die off of fish. This was due to a multitude of variables, but was largely related to the transition from the stocking trout to the lake being of too large of a temperature change and the sheer shock killed off hundreds of fish. Though many fish were lost, a few very superb fish were caught! The numbers...... Read More
