Ranger 85 3 Day Report
11-2-2011
Frank Ursitti - Ranger 85
Hi everyone,
I couldn't wait to get to my desk and put together a rundown from this past weekend's trip. What a great time it was.
We fished our first 3 day from Channel Islands Sportfishing. While the crew of the Ranger 85 is no stranger to multi-day trips, this one had a particular vibe that was hard to describe. With 27 open party anglers onboard, it felt more like a private charter with a group that fishes with us often.
Friday evening was like a homecoming of sorts when I walked onboard. So many familiar faces that I knew instantly it was going to be a magical trip. It's trips like these that make feel successful in my business and our operation.
We all got together and made a game plan.
We got underway and fished bait for a few hours on the beach and then set a course for San Miguel Island. Saturday morning found us downloading on quality rockfish as well as lingcod. It was our plan to fish hard till sundown and then break the trip up a bit by fishing offshore in search of albacore on day 2. By sundown the first day, all were tired and rightfully so...fishing was OFF THE HOOK!
We stuck to our plan and left the anchorage at 0200 and headed west. Sunrise we dropped the jigs back and began our rotations. The weather was up, but water conditions looked ripe. We searched for a couple hours to no avail, until finally a single fish on the sonar...we circled, threw bait and HOOK UP! We landed 1 albacore! We continued to scour the region with no success and conditions began to deteriorate. We decided to head back to the island.
We arrived back at San Miguel at 4 pm and began our quest for whitefish. We anchored up and managed to put on over 150 whitefish using single hook and sliders...like fishing calico bass! What a great time we had catching these fish on surface tackle.
At dark, we again went into the island and spent the night in scenic Cuylers Harbor. At first light we fished for halibut however unsuccessfully. We decided to then target lingcod and lingcod we did catch.
In all, we managed 810 rockfish, 170 white fish, 89 lingcod, 10 sheephead and 1 albacore.
I really want to thank all who fished this trip and who continue to support us by fishing with us throughout the year. I'm going to list a few, and if I don't catch all, please don't hold it against me...Fernando...always a pleasure; Tom and Dean...you make me feel like I'm not at work, but fishing with friends; Jerry...it was nice to finally fish with you, I enjoyed the banter and your company; Craig...just great to spend a few days with you; Russ, wonderful to be with you for the weekend; Ray...what can I say? I like fishing with you, and deep down we all do; Dennis and Gordon...I really enjoyed fishing with you both...still want to know which one was adopted and Dennis we need to go Fly Fishing; Jerry, the silent assassin, I'm so glad you made the trip; Dave, I know you had a good time...it was nice meeting and fishing with you for a few days; and the list goes on...There are quite a few others that I have not mentioned here that made this trip special and I trust had a good time.
We look forward to spending a few more days on the water with all and hopefully having as good a time if not better when we do.
Look for more great trips onboard Channel Islands Sportfishings leader in multi-day adventures, the Ranger 85.
