From beginning to end, this overnight sportfishingreport.com charter trip on the Renegade out of Seaforth Landing in Mission Bay (San Diego) was first class.

Captain Doug Reed (owner and operator), 2nd Captain Chris, and the crew (Deckhands Joe, Jason, and Dave the cook) did a fantastic job with a great boat. The Renegade is an excellent fishing platform with a full galley and seating, a stern that easily accommodated four abreast for trolling, and single and double bunks for all 29 anglers aboard (with room to spare). Each bunk had fresh linens, blanket, a pillow, and dark curtains. Dave kept the galley spotless and turned out all kinds of food for the passengers and crew from (before) first light until after dark.

The plan was to head well offshore ??? at least 60 nautical miles and into the kelp ??? well past the barracuda and sand bass in search of the elusive albacore. The second choice would be yellowtail, along with any bluefin that happened to be in the neighborhood. Conditions got a little bit rolly into midday, which made the already-spacious decks a little more spacious for those intrepid souls who kept at it, drift after drift, troll after troll, into the early evening. Although we ultimately found no albacore, Captain Doug kindly decided to extend the charter for several more hours for a few more yellowtail-seeking drifts ??? as a result, it was well after 9pm when we returned to the dock - just about 24 hours from when we left Mission Bay the night before.

In the end, as Joe and Jason lined up the fish on the stern, the day belonged to Mando Torres. Mando celebrated his 60th birthday in style by quietly catching a manifest-leading 7 yellowtail! Very nicely done, Mando.

Zach caught the first fish of the day, which was also the biggest ??? a 28# yellowtail! He ended up with 2 yellowtail for the day and half of the $280 jackpot, with the other half going to the crew. By the way, Zach will be 10 years old this Fall.
