Catchy Tackle's 15-Day trip on Intrepid ended and the results went into the books Saturday, October 22 after skipper Kevin Osborne docked the boat at Pt. Loma Sportfishing and set his 22 anglers off with their gear. They were happy anglers, since they had the season's first catch of five cows and a herd of lesser tuna in the 80 to 190-pound bracket. Wayne Martin was chartermaster. An imposing fish of 304 pounds was hung for Bill Goodwin of Livermore. It was the first tuna of the trip, noted Osborne. It was caught on the kite with a mackerel pinned to a 10/0 Mustad 7691 hook . The hefty Mustad was tied to 130-pound Seaguar fluorocarbon and 130-pound Line One spectra, on one of the boat's rigs: an Avet 50 W reel and a Super Seeker 6463 XXXH rod. Goodwin said he pulled the beast over to the boat in 20 minutes. An identical second fish was hung moments later, but as the rig was handed down to the waiting Ken Buzzell, the hook pulled.

James Beecher of Wilmington won second place for his 261-pound tuna. It was missing about 25 pounds of meat from its side, where a shark helped itself as the fish was gaffed. Beecher said his tuna bit on a sardine and a 5/0 ringed Owner Gorilla hook on 100-pound Seaguar Premier , 100-pound Izorline and 130-pound Izorline spectra on an Avet 30 reel and a Calstar 770 XH rod custom wrapped by The Rusty Hook. George Alfaro of Torrance won third place for a 205-pound tuna. He bagged it with a sardine on a 5/0 ringed Owner Super Mutu hook on 100-pound Seaguar Premier fluorocarbon and 100-pound Line One spectra on an Avet 30 reel and a Super Seeker 2 X 4 rod.

Chuck Lox of Lubbock, TX caught a 212.4-pound yellowfin on a sardine and a 6/0 Owner Gorilla hook tied to 130-pound Seaguar fluorocarbon and 130-pound Line One spectra on a Penn 50 W reel and a Super Seeker 6460 XXH rod.

Chartermaster Wayne Martin of Parker, CFO got a 205-pounder with a sardine on a 5/0 ringed Chuck Lox of Lubbock, TX caught a 212.4-pound yellowfin on a sardine and a 6/0 Owner Gorilla hook on 100-pound Seaguar fluorocarbon and 130-pound Line One spectra. He used an Accurate 30 reel and a Super Seeker 2 X 4 rod.

"Bill got that big fish the first thing in the morning near Clarion," said skipper Osborne. "Then we went out to the Hurricane Bank for two and a half days before the water rolled over. Fishing was pretty good but we found our best school off the bank under birds. We went back to Clarion and had a nice evening bite, but the sharks were bad. All in all, we had decent fishing and decent weather, too."
