The Trout are Boiling at Silver Lake
9-24-2011
Andrew Jones
Fishing at Silver Lake and Rush Creek has continued to be excellent. Another 900 pounds of DFG fish and a load of Alpers Trout courtesy of Mono County this week has only added to the number of nice trout that have come into the store this week. The calm mornings and evenings have allowed anglers to see the trout boiling on the water as the try to catch the big one. A # 16 Elks Hares Caddis, a #14 Royal Coachman and a #16 Blue Dun have been making those fish rise in the calm morning or evenings according to reports from various anglers. Salmon Peach, Chunky Cheese Gulp, Salmon Egg Red and garlic have worked well from the shore during the middle of the day. Take your dough baits deep in the water, then about 30" off the bottom to the top of the weed line for the best results. If you enjoy flipping a lure try fishing at the South end of the Lake where Rush Creek comes in and drift down towards the North end where Rush dumps out of Silver lake using a Thomas Buoyant or a Needle Fish for some good results.
Fish of the Week belong to Mike McCarthy who landed a nice 1 pound 13 ounce tagged trout using Gulp Eggs. David Hill of Ventura caught a 2 pound 4 ounce from the shore of Silver Lake using Rainbow Power Bait. Robert and Les Kanawah had a nice stringer from the shore of Silver Lake using Power Baits. Linda Wray of Riverside had a nice 2 pound 14 ounce using Salmon Peach Power Bait. Bert Solis of Simi Valley caught a 1 pound 12 ounce tagged trout using a trout magnet. Karen Alexander of Woodland landed a 2 pound 2 ounce tagged trout using Rainbow Glitter Power Bait. Young Gavin Ross of Lake Elsinore, in the main photo, had a great 3 pound 8 ounce rainbow from the shore of Silver Lake using Salmon Peach Power Bait.
Remember that the Eastern Sierras Second Summer Trout Derby put on by The Eastern Sierra Fishing Coalition and the Western Outdoor News is still going on at Silver Lake, June Lake, Grant Lake, Convict Lake, Crowley Lake, Lake Mary in Mammoth and Bridgeport reservoir. All you have to do is catch a tagged trout and win some nice free prizes.
Now that Fall is also upon us, watch for the Fall colors to begin to change . We are just starting to see some change in the higher elevations, but the cooler nights will push the trees from their Summer greens to their golden yellow and oranges of Fall. Keep an eye on Mono Counties Web site for updates on the Fall color progression - bring your wife up for the beauty of the Sierras in the Fall and wet your line and catch the big trout that are in the lakes.
