Big "Golden Stones" Are on the menu for Truckee River Browns and Rainbows
9-9-2011
Matt Koles
In both states, California and Nevada, September is starting out nicely, and the Truckee River is producing some nice fish. Most of the summer bugs are waning down, such as the yellow stones, and the caddis. There are big golden stones on the menu though, something that's been happening late in the year for the last few. When I mean big, they are about 2.5 to 3 inches long, and fish are definitely noticing them. Pat's Rubberleggs #4, or my Skipper Stone #4, are producing some nice fish. Crayfish are still working, but stones and baeits patterns should be the bulk of the flies in your box for the next month, or two. Some cool weather will only enhance the fishing, and get the browns moving. We should have cooler weather by this weekend. Right now, the fish are still spread out, and I've been finding most of my fish in faster water. Get your fall trip going, this could be your year, for that big brown trout. This is John's big brown from today.
