29 inch Rainbow caught at South Lake -- Outlook for the Labor Day Weekend is Excellent
8-27-2011
Jared Smith
Wow - what a week of fishing at South Lake! Topped by a massive 29" Rainbow caught by Jimmy Brown from the Inland Empire that weighed in at a whopping 10 lb 8 oz, the fishing for large numbers and quality fish was excellent all week long. Heavy stocking by DFG and the second half of the trophy Rainbows purchased by Southern California Edison arriving this week should make for a great week and the outlook is excellent for the upcoming holiday week.
The best spots on the lake continue to be the inlets in the back of the lake behind the island. The Gilbert Glacier and the Treasure Lake inlets are holding tons of active feeding trout. Some anglers are catching & releasing as many as 60 fish per boat using artificials. Don't mean to sound like a broken record but mini-jigs were the way to go this week with bright pink, grasshopper, or any dark jigs working best. Folks tying directly to the jig or fishing the jig 5 ft under a bobber were the most successful. Salmon Peach powerbait is doing well for bait dunkers.
With the inlets fishing so good, the Rock Slide is being passed over by the majority of anglers but the folks wise enough to stop and fish there are doing excellent. Bring pink plastic trout worms, mini-jigs or nightcrawlers fished under a bobber are doing best.
Wind made fishing the dam a bit difficult this week but anglers braving the breezy conditions did very well on fish to 3 lbs using the heavier metal lures like Kastmasters and red/gold Thomas Bouyants.
Trolling was tough this week for the few anglers out there trying for the deep fish.
We'd like to remind private boaters that there is designated boat trailer parking in the lower lot - please use it! It's frustrating for other folks visiting the lake and trailhead to see two private boaters taking up 9 parking spots because they're too lazy to disconnect their trailer and put it where it belongs.
