Salmon
The Salmon season so far on the Sacramento River continues to heat up with the high river flows in Northern California. Boats have been landing fish between Colusa and Los Molinos in the deeper holes and runs. The fish have been very bright in color and a few fish have been landed in the 20-30lb range. Most of the Salmon being caught have been the smaller 8-10lb Jack's that have traveled up the river in pods. The fish have been biting on K16 Kwickfish in the green/silver, silver, and gold patterns with a sardine wrap. Roe has been working very well while using the darker red Pro Cure's and the common natural cures. The local water temperatures in the Chico area have been between 58-61 degrees with little fluctuation throughout the day. The fish have been on the bite all day long when pods of fish are located in the deeper holes and runs. So far, the key has been a good fish finder, properly handled bait, and a quiet kicker motor. The flows have been running between 11,000-13,000cfs and the Diversion Dam continues to hold back water for the local farmers.
Striped Bass
The Striped Bass fishing continues to bounce back between good and fair in the Lower Sacramento. The bite has come on in the early afternoon and evenings while fishing behind all different types of river structure. There has been a decent top water bite in the early mornings while fishing zara spooks, spitting images, and poppers. The larger fish have been on the bait and top water bite in the mornings and evenings. The most productive lure has been the medium diving Yo Zuri stick baits in the gold and silver colors. The fish have been stacked in the slough inlets and near the mouths of the river canals. Bait fishing with minnows, anchovies, sardines, and crayfish has been producing fish all day long in the deeper holes.
