Summer arrives and it's about time

So the boys are on the bluefin and the yellowfin have started to show, too, and there's 70-degree water on the beach below Dana Point and the bass had a real liking for the Shimano Waxwing yesterday afternoon on a trip with Al "the Sports Barber" Rentziperis. Welcome summer.

You know, we've seen a lot of bait in the SoCal Bight off and on this year and dealt with more than our fair share of cold water. I know where the albacore are -- I talked to great friend Mark Gasich in Oregon and they got six longfin trolling Channel Island 'Chovy Fish Traps, black and purple CD 14 Rapalas and Mexican Flag feathers just 10 miles off Brookings in 59.9-degree purple blue water last week.

That doesn't mean we won't see some big albies come through later this season. In fact, they'll probably show in the fall in a mix of bluefin and yellowfin. There's a southwest swell on tap this weekend -- but not a big one -- and the high pressure is supposed to move back to the perfect spot.

All in all I would say this would be a good weekend to give the offshore and inshore bite a shot. Summertime and the fishing is easy.
