Trophy broodstock catfish are now part of each week's pair of plants at SARL and the 15-pounder landed by Dave Morales of Glendora on mackerel from a pontoon boat was the best fish reported after last Friday's plant of trophy fish.

Jeff Reed, Laguna Hills, landed a 9 1/4-pound channel on mackerel from Chris' Pond for the second best fish, but most of the wide open bite was for 1 1/2 to three pound fish that filled stringers all of the past week. Some of the top stringers included a 15-fish catch made Santiago Palacios, West Covina, that weighed in at 39 pounds, including a 4-2, all caught on shrimp at the road. Art and Shiela Harvey, Orange, weighed in 15 cats that totaled 31-8, topped by a 3-8, all on a variety of baits at the Pumphouse. Varian Virgen, Buena Park, had eight cats for 26 pounds on the M&M combo, and his best fish was a 6-4, while Chris and Maxwell Strange, Cerritos, landed 12 cats for 22-4 on M&Ms. Jim Barnett, Palos Verdes, landed five catfish for 12-8, including a five-pounder, on mackerel, while Ethan, Vincent, Johnathan, and Tony Nguyen, all Garden Grove, landed five cats for 11 pounds. The catfish haven't been too picky with shrimp, mackerel, and either the marshmallow-meal worm or marshmallow-nightcrawler combos the best bet. Adding one of the prepared scents or paste baits has also improved the action on all four of these baits. The fish are showing all around the The Lakes' complex so there really hasn't been one or two hotspots like earlier in the season.

While getting little fishing pressure, the tilapia are also being stocked each week and some are real quality fish. Sean Blevin, Fullerton, landed a 2 1/2-pound tilapia on a nightcrawlers in Chris' Pond. Most are running to from 1 1/2 to two pounds. There also continues to be quite a few carp in the catch.
