Fishing Conditions Overview

7-17-2011
Bill Roecker

Several days of windy conditions on the offshore waters made it very tough on anglers trying to get a bluefin bite started this week. Most boats gave it a day and then moved in to inshore waters to fish for yellowtail and bottom fish. Some huge whitefish and calico bass were in the catches, as well as a couple of big goldspotted sand bass and sheephead. Fishing for red rockfish was also good.

The albacore reported far to the west of San Diego have not materialized at a closer distance so far, and the big schools of bluefin in local waters for more than a month still have shown little inclination to wrap their lips around baited sardines. Skippers are considering the possibilities of fishing at Guadalupe Island, and many boats are urging anglers to bring their passports along, on the possibility that the big island will get a closer looks shortly. Passports for the island trips are mandatory.
