The following are July dates:
July 1 - Northern California red abalone fishery closed through July 31.
July 1 - Dungeness crab season closed south of the Mendocino-Sonoma county border through November 5.
July 2 - Free Fishing Day, statewide. On this day, people may fish California's waters without a sport fishing license. All regulations, such as bag and size limits, gear restrictions, report card requirements, fishing hours and stream closures remain in effect. Every angler must have the appropriate report card if fishing for steelhead, sturgeon, or salmon in the Smith and Klamath-Trinity River systems.
2 - Commercial ocean salmon season opens (Saturdays through Wednesdays only) from the Oregon/ California border to Humboldt South Jetty (California portion of Klamath Management Zone). There is a possession and landing limit of 15 Chinook per day. All salmon caught must be landed within the area and within 24 hours of any closure. Season extends through July 20 or until a 1,400 Chinook quota is reached.
July 5 - Commercial ocean salmon season closes from Point Arena to the U.S./ Mexico border.
July 7, 9, 19, 25 and 30 - Yolo Bypass Wildlife Area Bat Talk and Walk in Davis. Starts at 6:45 p.m. on July 7 and 9; 6:30 p.m. on July 19, 25 and 30. A 45-minute indoor presentation on bat natural history followed by an opportunity to view live bats. The group will carpool to the Yolo Bypass Wildlife Area to watch one of the largest colonies of Mexican free-tailed bats in California as it emerges to hunt insects at sunset. Cost: $10.00 per adult (children under 16 are free) plus $2 ticket processing fee. Advance online registration is required at Advance online registration linkwww. July 8 - Northern black bass permit draw (for contests to be held on waters north of the Tehachapi Mountains), at which the sponsors of black bass fishing contest may apply for Event-type Fishing Contest Permits, for contests to be held in 2012. July 11 - Kid's Fishing Day at Mount Shasta Fish Hatchery, 3 North Old Stage Road, Mt. Shasta (96067). For kids who are 15 and younger and able to hold a rod and reel, three ponds will be stocked with trout and people will be on hand to answer questions about fishing. Registration is open from 8:45 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Fishing from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. For more information please call Monty Currier at (530) 225-2368.
July 14 - San Francisco Harbor Safety Committee meeting, 10 a.m. to noon at the Port of Richmond Harbormaster's Office, 1340 Marina Way South, Richmond (94804).
July 15-25 - Stanislaus County Fair at Turlock Fairgrounds: Water, Wetlands and Wildlife main exhibit (Merced County Fair 2010 international award winner!). From 5 to 11 p.m. weekdays and noon to 11 p.m. weekends. DFG's Los Banos, North Grasslands, Volta and Mendota Wildlife Areas, the La Grange unit and the Classroom Aquarium Education Program will have displays and activities to enhance people's understanding and appreciation of DFG's conservation programs for wetland habitats and native wildlife.
July 15 - Southern black bass permit draw (for contests to be held on waters south of the Tehachapi Mountains), at which the sponsors of black bass fishing contest may apply for Event-type Fishing Contest Permits, for contests to be held in 2012. July 21 - Humboldt Bay Harbor Safety Committee meeting, 9 to 11 a.m. in the Woodley Island Marina conference room, Eureka. The Area Contingency Plan meeting will begin at 1 p.m. the same day.
July 23 - Deer hunting season opens in Zone B4.

July 27 - San Diego Harbor Safety Committee meeting, 10 a.m. to noon at the Port District of San Diego Administration Building, 3165 Pacific Highway, San Diego (92101).
July 29 - Commercial ocean salmon season opens from Horse Mountain to the U.S./ Mexico Border.Open seven days a week; closes August 29.
July 30 - Annual Children's Fishing Festival in Mammoth Lakes. California Fishing Passport program staff and Fishing in the City staff will help kids 12 years and under fish for trout at the Snowcreek Ponds. Free event.
July 30 - Last day of recreational Dungeness crab season in Del Norte, Humboldt and Mendocino counties.
