Bass are still in spawn mode at Lake Wohlford

5-28-2011
Wohlford Lake Staff

The trout are becoming scarcer but can still be found in small numbers in the western most portions of Oakvale Cove and near the buoys. Warmer water temperatures have pushed the trout into the deeper areas of the lake. The best baits have been powerbait and/or powerworms, or inflated nightcrawlers.

Favorable conditions exist for the bass fishing and the spawn is continuing in, perhaps, a second or third wave. Many large females are present and are hitting crawdads or creature baits in particular. There were many catches in the 5-8 pound range that were reported over the past few days. If cloud cover increases over Memorial Day weekend results should be promising. Bass can be found near rock piles especially in the morning and late afternoons.

Crappie are being caught almost exclusively in the early mornings. Crappie are most often caught using small jigs or live golden shiners.

The first of four catfish plants is scheduled for July 1st. Catfish are becoming easier to find throughout the lake and prefer cut mackerel or chicken liver.
