Norman Kagawa docked his Shogun at Fisherman's Landing April 23 after an eight-day trip with 28 anglers to Alijos Rocks. The boat also visited Cedros Island on the way home, he said, and collected a dozen premium yellowtail there, as well as one whopper yellow at The Rocks. Fishing at The Rocks on the first afternoon was excellent, said skipper Norm. "We got about 90 tuna from two PM to five-thirty," he noted. "they were biting sons of guns. As far as life at the Rocks is concerned, we saw lots of humpback whales, so there must be quite a bit of bait around, and the Rocks were really birded up. At Cedros the water was cold, but we still got some good yellowtail."

Mike O'Neill of Boise, ID took 20 minutes to land the trip's best tuna, a 75.8-pounder. He said it bit on a sardine and a 2/0 ringed Owner Gorilla hook tied to 40-pound pink Yo-Zuri fluorocarbon and 40-pound Izorline. He said he used 65-pound Izorline spectra on a Pro Gear 454 reel and a Calstar 700 M rod.

Kent Iwamoto of Santa Ana won second place for a 65-pund yellowfin tuna.

Kevin Johnson of South Point, Iowa got a 62.6-pound tuna and tied with Doug Okada of Moorpark for third place.

The lineup shot was filled out by Kuni Shimabukuro of Burbank, who posed with his 56.8-pound Alijos Rocks yellowtail, and Ryan Shopay of LA, who had a 27-pound Cedros Island halibut.

O'Neill said he got the big yellow, best so far this year, on a mackerel on a 7/0 Gamakatsu hook with a 16-ounce sinker on a dropper loop. He used 100-pound Izorline and 130-pound Izorline spectra on a TLD 30 reel and a Calstar 6465 XH rod.
