The First Signs of Spring, Yellowtail are beginning to be seen

Pete Gray

The first signs of spring are here, as there are plenty of yellowtail being seen, and some caught too just south of the Coronado Islands. With good weather back this weekend, the San Diego from Seaforth Sportfishing is catching some fish, and seeing plenty. Let's all hope this is the start of good spring fishing. There were reports of some white sea bass being caught in northwest La Jolla, and a good signal is the squid light boats are back there making squid. Up to this point, there has not been that volume of squid we saw last spring, but things could turn around quickly.

On the long range scene, Captain Frank LoPreste is having another fantastic trip aboard the Royal Polaris. Lots of big yellowfin tuna and wahoo from southern waters. Check out the story on the front page of our web site www.hookup1090.com on the Let's Talk Hook-up/ Cass Tour Pesca Panama trip. Great photos and story from a fabulous trip. Speaking of our trips, check the complete list at www.hookup1090.com/trips. There are a few spots on the Independence 5 day in July and the Royal Polaris 7 day. Two spots left on our Kingfisher Charters Sitka, Alaska trip in June and just one spot left on our Dove Island Lodge in Sitka, Alaska trip in August. Book soon, as these trips are filling fast.

Also our Shimano/Let's Talk Hook-up on the water seminars start June 15 aboard the Islander from Fishermans Landing. This is a 1 1/2 day kayak mother ship trip. There are just 8 spots left, so act quickly and get on this incredible adventure. Even for inexperienced kayak anglers, this is a perfect trip. The crew of the Islander are experts and take all safety measures to ensure a successful and safe trip. The crew is in constant contact with the anglers, bring bait and refreshments to you, and help put you on the fish. This mid June trip is prime time for big halibut, calico bass, white sea bass and yellowtail. The boat drops you and your kayak in the prime spots up wind, and you float and paddle down wind and picked up when you are ready to get back on the big boat. Fast Lane Kayaks will provide use of a fully outfitted Hobie Mirage drive kayak for free if you want to try the best. Call Dana Landing in Mission Bay to make reservations- 619-226-2929

Tomorrow on Let's Talk Hook-up we will be live at Day at the Docks at the San Diego landing in Point Loma. Our guests will be Captain Mike Lackey from the Vagabond and world record holder Mike Livingston. We will have a Let's Talk Hook-up booth all day with hats, t-shirts, free stickers and newsletters. Please come by and say hello. Next Saturday from 7am to 9am on XX 1090AM, Pete Gray and Rock Cod Rick with Richard "Cassman" Castaneda from Cass Tours. Cassman is always full of information on exciting fishing destinations in southern waters. Also in the studio will be Duane Broadway from Cedros Adventures. This is a unique operation located on the island of Cedros. Sunday from 7am to 9am we will be back in the XX1090AM studios with Captain Art Taylor from the Searcher. Art is one of the most experienced captains in the fleet, and will have insight to the upcoming tuna season.
