Wohlford Lake Staff

Last Plant: 1,500 lbs of Rainbow Trout Wednesday March 23rd.

Next Plant: 1,500 lbs of Rainbow Trout Wednesday April 6th.

Water temperature: At surface 61.70 f., 11.30 D.O. @ 15' 56.12 f., 6.23 D.O.

Water level: Low level, private water craft are currently banned.

In order to protect Wohlford from invasive exotic Quagga mussels, there is still a temporary ban on private water craft and equipment that could have been exposed to mussels. Restricted equipment includes private boats, canoes, kayaks, float tubes, trolling motors, fish finders, anchors and other equipment that contacts the water.

Lake Wohlford is offering $20 all day motorboats* to seniors on Tuesdays and to active military on the first and third Saturdays of each month.*This rate applies to regular motor boat rentals, no Bass Boats, and no discounted  ? day rate.

The trout bite has been sporadic due to the rains, but staining due to runoff seems minimal thus far. Look for conditions to improve by mid-week. Bud Leavenworth of Point Loma had the largest trout of the week at 8.50#s it was caught on a nightcrawler on Senior Shoreline. Bosko Kustudic came in a close second with his 7.20# fish caught on yellow powerbait in the same location. The best spots for trout over the past week have been in Oakvale Cove and on Senior Shoreline. The best baits have been powerbait and/or powerworms, greens or yellows are the most popular colors, or inflated nightcrawlers.

The bass spawn has begun and small to large bass can be found moving in to shallow areas along the shore where gravel like sandy materials are present for their nests. Mike Novoa of Escondido caught a 9.75# Bass on a swimbait west of Senior Shoreline on Sunday. The same day a 5.60# bass was caught and released by Tanner Forman of Fallbrook using an 8 inch plastic worm. The best baits for bass have been swimbaits, and dark colored plastics. They prefer rocky outcropping and bite most frequently in the early mornings and late afternoons.

The first crappie of the season was weighed in Thursday and tipped the scale at a very respectable 2.10#s. It was caught by Jeff Bias of San Diego on a kastmaster lure at the east end of the lake. Crappie are often found near submerged willows and prefer shady spots to hide in. They are most often caught on live golden shiners or using finger jigs (any combination of colors that includes white seems to do well).

Each month Whopper Contest winners in 4 categories are awarded a free fishing and boating permit. For further information on the contest or fishing conditions, please contact the Ranger Station at (760) 839-4346.
