On February 11th Captain Marcus Bailey took out 23 anglers aboard the Clemente for the Friday Halibut Drift. The anglers were eager and excited about possibly getting their name on the leader board. Seven lucky anglers captured halibut on this trip. Mike Knudtson the luckiest of them all, reeled in a 43 pound 8 ounce halibut, using a Phenix fishing rod, a Calcutta 400S reel, and squid for bait, which puts him in the lead of the Derby. Mike said "This was the greatest trip and the biggest fish I have ever caught in my life". Cher owens, a frequent angler and a Dana Wharf Lady Angler, reeled in a 8 pound 10 ounce halibut and Jeanne Koester who is also a frequent angler and Lady Angler reeled in a 5 pound 8 ounce halibut. Nick Gerbold the youngest of the group at ten years old from Olathe, Kansas gave the group some competition when he reeled in a 6 pound 3 ounce halibut. The other halibut were captured by Jay Sullivan 6 pound 3 ounces, Kirk Johnson 5 pound 3 ounces, and Steve Garcia 4 pound 8 ounces. The leader board is full of 25 legal halibut and the derby runs through April, anglers from all over still have a chance to catch a big one and win the growing jackpot that is now over $2000.00.
