Ixtapa - Zihuatanejo Fishing Report
11-25-2010
Larry Edwards
The better bite for this past week in the Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo region was in the 20-25 mile areas, with excellent opportunities for sailfish and blue marlin. According to Captain Temo Verboonen, the billfish were biting well, both the blue marlin and sailfish with the blues in the 200 lb. average range. Also helping with the action is the dorado bite that continues to be the fish of the day for dinners. The inshore fishing remains very good for the light tackle anglers with very good catches on Sierra, bonitos, chulas, jack cravelle and even a few roosterfish now in the mix. Inshore waters are calm but cooler, in the 78-79 degree range.
IZ Climate: Warm, pleasant and partly cloudy days with temps from 71 nights to 92 daytime highs.
Sea Conditions: Calm seas with light & variable surface breezes. Water temps cool inshore and rising to about 81 at the 100 fathom curve and gradually rising from there to the 1000 fathom curve at 83-84 degrees. Water has a greenish tint to about 20 miles, then blues up from there on outbound. Almost no swell and very light surface breezes persist.
Best bait/lure: The inshore fishing was good on poppers and live bait and the offshore waters seemed to be best on the rigged baits.
Best Fishing Area: The billfish bite was between the 20-25 mile mark from the entrance to Zihuatanejo Bay, where the water clarity was much improved.
Bait Supply: Lots of sardines and generally, no bait problem for this area.
