NICE BIRTHDAY PRESENT (112410)!!! Harold Davis of Davis Boats was chartermaster on Frank LoPreste's Royal Polaris during the trip that returned to Fisherman's Landing November 24. Davis said he was more than pleased with the expedition, which visited several spots including the Buffer Zone, and brought back around a dozen cows. Line One Spectra owner-distributor Jerry Brown of Gold Hill, OR was also aboard. The biggest cow came to Fred Falls, 65, of San Juan Capistrano. It weighed 272.6 pounds and was jackpot ineligible, since it came on the kite. Fred said it bit a sardine on a ringed Super Mutu hook from Owner. He fished with 130-pound Blackwater fluorocarbon and 130-pound Blackwater Spectra on a Penn 50 SW reel modified by Cofe and Cal Sheets, and a Seeker 6463 XXXH rod. "He's my best fish," said Falls. "He wore me out! The fight lasted about 45 minutes." Chico Leonard of Alpine won first place for a 215.4-pound Tuna. He said it bit a sardine on a 5/0 ringed Super Mutu tied to 100-pound Blackwater fluorocarbon and 130-pound Line One Spectra. He used a Tiagra 30 reel and a Calstar 765 H rod. "It took about 40 minutes," said Leonard. "Most of that was on the bow doing a dance with Vince Biondo, but we both got our fish." Bob Wolfson turned 75 on the trip, and that was the day he caught a 214.6-pound Tuna, which won him second place. He said it was a two-hour fight that went on after the tuna took his sardine on a 5/0 VMC angled hook. The hook was on 100-pound Blackwater fluorocarbon and 100-pound Line One Spectra, on a Tiagra 16 reel and a Calstar 760 M rod. Frank Alepe of Wilmington won third place for a 205-pound Yellowfin he bagged with a sardine on a 7/0 Owner Super Mutu hook tied to 130-pound Blackwater fluorocarbon leader and 130-pound Izorline Spectra. He fished with a Penn 50 reel and a Calstar 7460 H rod tied by Yo's. He also won the Rollo jackpot for the trip's best Wahoo, a 50.6-pounder. Kathy Rounds of San Diego, Accurate/Izorline pro-staffer, got a 225-pound Tuna with a double trouble sardine rig on the kite. She said it came to the boat in a half-hour, after it took a 'dine on a 6/0 Super Mutu hook tied to 130-pound Izorline and 130-pound Izorline Spectra on her Accurate ATD 50 reel and a Calstar 760 H rod. Keith Barnett of San Diego caught a 215-pound Tuna on a sardine and a 6/0 ringed Gorilla hook on 100-pound Blackwater fluorocarbon and 130-pound Line One Spectra, with an Avet 50 reel and a Super Seeker2 x 4 rod. Vince Biondo of Del Mar spent an hour getting to know a 210-pound Yellowfin that ate his sardine on a 5/0 Super Mutu tied to 130-pound Momoi fluorocarbon and 130-pound Line One Spectra. He said he used an Avet 50 reel and a Calstar 6460 XXH rod. Mike Candland of San Diego only needed 20 minutes to deck his 209-pounder, after it bit a sardine on a 5/0 ringed Owner Super Mutu hook tied to 130-pound Blackwater and 130-pound Line One Spectra. He fished with a Sheets-treated Penn 50 reel and a Calstar 6465 XH rod. Zach Schenk of Watsonville is 16, and added to his cow collection with a 201-pounder he got with a sardine on a ringed 6/0 Super Mutu, 130-pound Blackwater flourocarbon leader and 130-pound Line One Spectra. Young Zach used a Penn 30 reel and a Calstar 6460 H rod. Zach goes to Natural Bridges High in Santa Cruz.
