A day with Picante Sportfishing
7-10-2010
Richard Norwood
We started off with a great picture, on the 24ft. sport fisher, in front of the Picante office, as the Captain prepared to disembark. We headed out of the Cabo San Lucas Marina and hooked up with the local bait boat just outside of the break wall. We picked up five mullet, which looked quite hardy and began to bust out Picante's fantastic gear for our adventure. After we got everything in order we headed straight past the Arches which made for a spectacular view and continued into the Sea of Cortez. The water had been unseasonably cool for quite some time and that helped make the decision to stay in the Sea of Cortez; we shot out 5 miles offshore in front of the Westin Hotel. We trolled for several hours without a knockdown and my girlfriend suddenly shouts, "Marlin"! The Captain and I both swung around to see where she was pointing, and sure enough I saw a Marlin fining! We threw live bait in front on him several times but he just wasn't having any part of us. We continued to work to area, and my girlfriend spotted another Marlin. (she was on fire!) Kelsey pointed it out to the Captain and he finally got it to take the bait! Fish On! I fought the fish for about 10 minutes, watching fabulous jumping and Grey-hounding displays; it was fantastic! On the last series of jumps he unfortunately shook the hook, I was disappointed, but it had been a great experience.
The wind really started to come up and we unfortunately didn't have a windshield, which made for an extremely wet ride. We decided to troll for the last couple miles on the ride home and were rewarded with a beautiful little Dorado. It was Kelsey's first sport fish and she was exhilarated! After a couple quick pictures it was back to the Marina. We exchanged our good byes and we went back to the hotel full of stories and excitement.
