Mazatlan Fishing Report

7-22-2010
Larry Edwards

The dorado counts shot up this past week for the offshore cruisers, allowing for some good angler action with the 12-15 lb fish. The billfish counts fell off a bit this week for no apparent reason, as the water conditions are near excellent for the entire area. The overall fish counts for 20 days fished reflected 1 striper, 2 sailfsh, 10 yellowfin tuna and 109 dorado for 20 boat days fished in the offshore waters. The inshore super pangas reported in for 5 days fished and reflected limits of dorado, along with 10 pargo and 10 mojarres.

Mazatlan Climate: Mostly cloudy days with temps from 79 nights to 88 daytime highs with some light rain on Thursday.

Sea Conditions: Very good blue water outside of 10-12 miles and stable sea temps from 84-86 throughout the area. Light surface winds at 10-15 knots and little swell.

Best Fishing Area: Continues to be out to the southwest of the Marina El Cid, with dorado catches scattered from 15-25 miles.

Best Bait/Lure: Rigged baits, live bait and a variety of artificials were working well for the dorado and for those that had live bait, the drop back after a single dorado jig strike was almost a sure thing for a 2nd or 3rd dorado.

Bait Supply: Good supply of both, live bait and rigged baits.
