Hot Creek Fish Report

The Trout Fitter Staff
Water Conditions: Good
The flow is at 6 CFS plus the spring for about 21 cfs total.
The roads are open. Recent snow melts as it hits.
Fishing conditions and Hatches: Excellent
Fishing remains excellent in the canyon section. No change in the recipe . . .
Midges as early as 9 am followed by Baetis hatch starting about 11-12 and Caddis in the afternoon 'til 4 even some days. Everything coming off at Hot Creek is small, but when the bite goes off midday don't hesitate to go bigger and buggier.
The bite is strong midday as they all feed at once and the competition is keen - translated not too choosey.
Recommended Flies
DRIES: Extended body BWO 20#-22#, #20 to 24 Parachute Adams, or Brooks Sprout Baetis. Gray Caddis patterns late.
NYMPHS: Black or olive #20-24 WD-40's, #20-22 Zebra Midge in black or Flashback Optimidge, size 18. Gray or flashy scuds all day long. Midday, if action gets hot, go to size 16 Hares Ear, PT's or Prince Nymph . . . yes. 16 is not typo. Late go with La Fontaine's Caddis Sparkle Pupa and Gallitan's Pupa in size 18. Add in egg patterns and San Juan worms lately.
Streamers: Try streamers early and late but slow retrieves are better . . . still cold water.
